Education as a tool to combat rural depopulation

Most of the challenges facing the world, included in the sustainable development goals and the 2030 Agenda, go through an improvement in education and a regulatory or legal improvement. Likewise, the problem of rural depopulation also requires changes in the educational opportunities of the population of rural areas and innovation in its methodologies and formats. It is necessary to improve not only the educational offer but also to innovate in the methodologies to make them more attractive, adapted to the needs and context of rural areas.

It is necessary to facilitate the work, the training of teachers and their motivation. Being a teacher means "being able to touch the future of people" and with it also the future of the areas where they teach. It is necessary to especially improve Vocational Training with innovative educational methodologies that manage to engage students in these areas so that they can generate professional or entrepreneurial projects that contribute to the development of their territories, to sustainable rural development and do not have to go to large cities to develop. professionally.

This year 2022 and until 2024 we are working from Como una Cabra in the European Erasmus+ VETgoesRURAL Project, together with six other European entities; @radio_ecca, @maynoothuni, @eurolocaldevelopment, @prismonline.eu, @ihfeurope.eu, @idpeurope.

According to the recommendations of the European Commission, Vocational Training programs need to be more accessible to the population in rural areas. VET professionals need to undertake continuous professional development to deliver high-quality training through digital skills and effective innovative methods.

The objectives of VETgoesRURAL are precisely these: to improve the skills and abilities of VET professionals to offer better training and encourage the commitment of students in solated rural areas of the EU, to innovate in educational practices, to create methodologies and approaches of vocational training that respond to the needs and expectations of professionals and students in these areas, increase the quality of vocational training programs, the participation and permanence of students in training and reinforce the capacities and practices of national networks, regional and local Vocational Training centers.

This project is based on research on the needs and expectations of both the teaching staff and Vocational Training students in rural areas and a collection of experiences and good practices, as a starting point for the development of a suite of innovative, dynamic methodologies and tools. educational programs adapted to the context and needs of rural areas that will be open and available to teachers and that will be offered together with the corresponding training for their application.

If you are a teacher or professional training student in rural areas or areas at risk of depopulation and would like to collaborate in this project, if you want to tell us about your difficulties, interests or innovative practices that you are developing in your educational center, we would love to hear from you.
